Sam Harris on Gratitude

I stumbled on another powerful, at least for me, exercise from a lesson in Sam Harris’ meditation course. In this case, on how to “reboot” one’s attitude when feeling grumpy and feel gratitude.

Imagine you died yesterday. Yet you’re alive again today, in the exact same circumstances. How grateful would you be?

Today I have a bevy of unappealing administrative tasks and meetings, and feel bitchy that my legs have remained tight despite a lot of flexibility work and grrr, isn’t it about to get cold again…this was a useful and healthy exercise for me. He shares in the lesson the more commonplace comparison I’ve heard plenty of variants of – that at least a billion people on earth would trade places with me and be delighted. That resonated in my mind but was too abstract for a wholesale attitudinal reboot.
