Why Don’t SciFi Planets Have Different Gravity?

I’ve spent thousands of hours of my life watching Star Wars, thinking about it, or discussing it with friends from childhood to my own children.

My ten year old asked, six Star Wars movies into them, sarcastically: every planet has the same gravity as Earth.

I don’t know what they were thinking, sweetie.

The kids are enjoying the heck out of even the prequels. A few insights like the one above are going to keep me sharp to try to think differently even about things I think I’ve exhausted consideration of.

Other than movies about the moon – the one place we have non-fiction film already to calibrate our fictional expectation – I can’t think of a movie of hand that does handle this well. With special effects being so cheap, this is an opportunity for some auteur to seize.
