Begin by Studying the Endgame

“In order to improve your game, you must study the endgame before everything else, for whereas the endings can be studied and mastered by themselves, the middle game and the opening must be studied in relation to the endgame.”

– José Raúl Capablanca, Last lectures (1966), p. 19

Peter Thiel cited this in his always re-watchable “Competition is for Losers” YouTube video from 2014 (minute 27).

Conversely, “business plans” which are typically about the intermediate game tend to be useless.

Manage for today through rapid iteration, manage for forever with the endgame. The middle is a muck.
